Now that I got my gear back, I was finally able to explore the district properly. It was a huge district, though, so I couldn’t cover all of it in one sitting.

The first thing I did was to go to the local market and sell some of my excess items. I was now swimming in money, what with having over 2500 orens to my name. Of course, everything costs more money in the city to, so a single book about alghouls would take a fifth of that away from me.

The Witcher, Medicine Symbol

The snake is a symbol of medicine here as well.

I met up with Zoltan Chivay again, who apparently also found a way back into the city. I told him about my dice game conquests, so he directed me at four other professional gamblers in the city. Other than that, we had some philosophical discussions, but nothing important was really said. He has thoughts about his future marriage and Geralt has his worries about what the world is heading into and his future career.

I managed to find the house belonging to Shani, but instead of her, I found an old hag there, who soon threw me out. Next up was the house of Kalkstein, the alchemist who I did work for in the outskirts. This time, he has a far bigger job. Apparently, there’s a magical tower in the swamps, built by some other alchemist who’s long gone now. There’s something in the tower that creates monsters in the area and Kalkstein wants it. The problem is, no one knows how to enter the tower, so he wants me to find a way. For this, he offered 1000 oren as well as an item that would allow me to teleport between places of power and his laboratory. Definitely worth it, in my opinion.

The Witcher, Kalkstein

Kalkstein’s looks are… peculiar.

On the route from the sewer to the dungeon, there was the house of the local fence, whose name I forgot. He has a unique look to him, so gaming tropes make me think he will be important for something later on. For now, I just bought an axe from him that was stronger than the one I had and left.

Finally, I got to the hospital and met Siegfried again. Since he wasn’t the one who killed the cockatrice, he was put on guard duty. I guess things would have been different if I accepted his offer to join forces, but hey, at least he’s alive now. Someone needs to be on guard duty to.

As I said, the ship crashed into a forest nearby. The problem was, it was the Evil Forest, mwahahaaha!

Zidane was thrown out of the ship to somewhere nearby, so he went back to it immediately. Garnet and Vivi weren’t so lucky, which the game tells me through a unique new feature I wish they’d bring back in other games of the series – the ATE.

ATE stands for Active Time Event. Basically, every now and then, you get the option of pushing select to see what’s happening in some other place or what some of the other characters are doing while the main character is separated from them. Most of the ATE’s are optional, so if you’re just in a hurry and want to move on, you can skip them. If you’re interested, though, the feature allows the story to be told a bit differently compared to the rest of the series.

Final Fantasy IX, Evil Forest

Every new location gets a nice looking title screen.

I gained a level or two on the next screen and then continued on to the second screen, where I met Vivi and Garnet. The thing chasing them was an evil plant and it took Garnet away before I could kill it. Before anyone could react, another one arrived and tried to take Vivi, but we managed to kill this one. It infected us with something, though, so everyone fainted to wake up back at the ship.In any case, through an ATE, the game tells me Vivi and Garnet are in trouble, being chased by… something.  I couldn’t get into the ship yet, so I went in the only direction available – into the forest. Before that, I saved the game with the help of the moogle who explained the ATE feature to me.

Zidane decided to go after Garnet, so I had to speak to the boss, Baku, to get permission. I actually had to fight him, one on one, but he wasn’t to hard to beat. I took Vivi and Steiner with me and continued past the screen where the last battle was. Soon, I got to a pond where I could restore my health for free and had a moogle available to save my game, so I took some time to train for a bit.

Final Fantasy IX, Evil Forest Fountain

Moogles help you save the game.

The boss was dead soon and a bunch of smaller plants started chasing us. I managed to avoid most of them, but some battles were unavoidable. Luckily, the plants were easy to deal with. Soon, a sequence began where the forest starts to petrify entirely. Everyone runs, but Blank decides to stay behind, to hold the monsters off and gets petrified to. Before it happens, he throws the map of the Mist Continent to Zidane.A few screens later, I finally got to the boss. This was another plant, this time bigger and stronger than the last. Zidane spent most of the battle stealing the monsters items, while Vivi used Fire and helped Steiner use his Fire Sword ability. This is another cool feature of Final Fantasy IX. Whenever Steiner and Vivi are both in the party, Steiner gets access to the Magic Sword set of abilities. Basically, whichever spells Vivi has learned, Steiner can use to give his attacks an elemental affinity.

I got out of the sewers and immediately went to the dungeon to report in and get my stuff. I passed a few stores I took note of on the way there, but decided not to get into anything else until I got my gear back. I entered the dungeon and accidentally clicked on the grate on the floor.

I entered the sewer again, and it was a one-way passage. This was, of course, extremely annoying, but it ended up being profitable. As I was leaving for the second time, I stumbled into a knights corpse. On it was a key and a note about some cultists hiding in the sewers. The key was supposed to open the passage to their area.

The Witcher, Darkness

Yeah, it was dark. I had to use my last cat potion.

Apart from the circle and the enemies, there were two chests in the area, both stocked full of alchemical supplies. Overall, I’d say the accidental misclick was definitely worth it.I found the passage soon enough and started to clear the cultists lair. I was exclusively fighting humans here, so my silver sword didn’t do as much damage as a steel one would, but I did well enough. Eventually, I cleared out the whole area and even found another magical circle. Actually, now that I think about it, I’m not completely sure if it was a new sign and, in case it was, if I actually learned it, so I might actually come back to the sewers for the third time. In any case, I’ll let you know later, once I get to it.

The Witcher, Vizima

The graphics have aged. Not too badly, but still…

I made my way back out of the sewers, back through the city, and finally back to the dungeon. This time, I was careful with my mouse, so I managed to navigate around the grate. Vincent gave me some money as a reward for the head I brought to him, and the guard in charge gave me my gear back. I took most of it, but had to leave some behind, because my bags were full of loot I got in the cultist’s lair.

OK, first of all, this needs to be said. The graphics in this game are amazing, considering the platform it was released on and the other two Final Fantasy games of the generation. Square really managed to squeeze every last bit of power from the hardware and combine it with excellent design and style perfectly. Comparing this game to Final Fantasy VIII looks like comparing two different console generations. Secondly, it’s apparent from the start the game has a huge amount of charm. They tried to capture that childhood nostalgia and they succeeded.

Final Fantasy IX, Garnet

The jump in FMV quality was even more astounding.

The start of the game is mostly storytelling. The main character is Zidane, who is just a regular guy with a tail. He’s a member of Tantalus, a theater troupe that doubles as a gang of thieves. They arrived to Alexandria from Lindblum on their theater airship. They will be acting out a popular play but have been hired, at the same time, to kidnap the princess Garnet Til Alexandros XVII.

Final Fantasy IX, Puppet Show

I bet!

The story then switches to a small black mage called Vivi. He arrives to Alexandria with a ticket for the show, but it turns out it’s fake, so he joins forces with a rat kid and manages to sneak in to the show from the walls. This introduction also includes a tutorial battle against the troupes boss wearing a dragon mask. The battles in this game include four characters at once, which is also a return to the older games, from the Nintendo era. There’s a large emphasis on stealing from bosses. They usually hold items you can’t get otherwise until later in the game, so it’s usually a good idea to try and get them. Since Zidane is a thief, he usually spends most of the battle stealing.

Final Fantasy IX, Vivi Orunitia

Vivi is one of my favorite characters in the whole series.

Everyone realizes what’s happening and the queen orders fire on the ship. The troupe manages to get away, but the ship is badly damaged so they crash in the area under the mist, in a forest.Zidane and his friend, Blank sneak out during the show and disguise as guards to enter the castle. The thing is, the princess decides to run away anyway, so she ends up outright asking Zidane to kidnap her. They start running, but the princess’s loyal knight, Steiner, follows, thinking she needs help. Thanks to Blank continuing to pose as a guard and distracting Steiner, they manage to get to the ship. They clash with Steiner there, get mixed up with the play and in the meantime, Vivi gets to the stage trying to run away from a guard asking for his ticket.

While I had fun trying to roleplay through my writing about the first chapter of The Witcher, it seriously takes up to much of my time, so I wont do it from this point on. I actually ended up spending more time on writing than on actually playing the game.

I got captured by the guard and was taken prisoner. Coincidentally, the Professor was imprisoned to and got himself released just as I was taken in, so we exchanged a few words. It looks like he has friends in high places in Vizima or something.

The Witcher, The Professor

The Professor has a face I’d love to punch, kind of like Joffrey Baratheon.

I played a game of dice with a captive elf and then the guard captain, Vincent, I believe, entered the cell, offering freedom to anyone being able to kill a cockatrice in the sewers. Some random idiot volonteered first, so I had to kick his ass before they would let me do it. It seems cruel, but as Geralt said to him, it probably saved his life.

I didn’t get my gear yet. Instead, I just got a silver sword and some potions. The sewer was mostly infested with drowners, so there was no real danger. Almost as seen as I entered, I met Siegfried, who was a night of the Order of the Flaming Rose. Apparently, their order is based in the city and they handle monster slaying in the area. They also do it for free, which means they are a serious competition for the witchers.

The Witcher, Sigfried

Siegfried is an OK guy, if you ignore the religion.

Siegfried seemed like a nice guy, though. He even offered to join forces, but I decided to refuse. I soon found the cockatrice’s lair and managed to kill it without much difficulty. Siegfried was still there, so he directed me at the exit, even giving me a spare key.

I took the cockatrices head for the reward and left the sewers.

Guess what?

Final Fantasy IX, Title Screen

Best title screen ever, with the best title screen music ever.

Yup! After completing Final Fantasy VIII for the very first time in my life, I decided to make the experience complete and restart the final Final Fantasy on the platform. Final Fantasy IX is considered the best one on the PlayStation by many, and I certainly hold it in good memories. I wonder how it will hold up in a modern environment, though.

I was tricked!

I arrived at the inn to see Shani ambushed by another group of thugs. A few minutes later and she would be worse off than Vesna. I disposed of them and got the key from the innkeeper’s body. I told Shani to wait there and made my way to the hideout. I was obviously lied to by the reverend and most of the village. It was time to clear things out.

Two Salamandra lackeys were guarding the entrance and several more were inside the house. Once I cleared the place out, I’ve found two things. First of all, there was a shipment of crates with Haren’s markings on them. He was obviously working with the Salamandra. Secondly, there was a trapdoor, leading to an underground set of caves.

The Witcher, Crate Shipment

I guess money’s all that matters.

Alvin led me to a collapsed passage I could clear with my Aard sign.Past it was Abigail, preparing a spell she intended on using to save herself and Alving. She was more forthcoming now and finally told me about everything that was happening. Odo killed his brother. This explains why he had issues with Echinops plants in his garden. These plants usually grow on graves, so he must have buried his brother there. It would also explain the dog’s behavior.I descended and found another group of thugs to dispose of. Once they were dead, a bunch of children came out of hiding, including Alvin. Apparently, the villagers were giving them to the Salamandra as some sort of tribute. It was now certain that the reverend was in on it.

Mikul and some other villagers raped Ilsa. She hid in the crypt and drank the poison herself, not being able to live on with what happened. He might have had affection for the girl, but it was a dark, twisted kind of affection. As for Harren, that part was already obvious. He was nothing more than a profiteer. He would sell his stuff to anyone, regardless of what would be done with it.

The reverend, of course, was aware of it all. He approved, and even instigated a lot of the things that were happening in the village. He even exiled his own daughter, after she got pregnant, condemning her to a life of prostitution inside Vizima. None of them deserved to live.

The Witcher, Angry Mob

Mob mentality.

The battle was difficult, but thanks to some of Abigail’s spells, I prevailed and the beast was dead. The celebration as short, though. The reverend assembled his three lackeys and decided to try his luck, hoping I would be exhausted from battle. I was tired, but not tired enough to be beaten by a bunch of degenerates. In a few moments, they were all dead.I left the cave and Abigail followed. Most of the village, led by the reverend, was waiting outside, hungry for blood. Once the reverend was scared of, though, their courage dissipated and most of them dispersed. It was now time to deal with the beast.

Mikul was the smart one, though. He was nowhere to be seen. I took a city pass from the body of one of them, which would now allow me to finally enter the city. I got to the only open gate, at the old mill and found Mikul on his guard duty. At first, he seemed cooperative, accepting the pass, even though he knew it wasn’t mine, but it soon became apparent what his intentions were.

The gates opened and a squadron of the city guard, led by the captain, arrived and surrounded me. There was no point in fighting them. If I wanted to enter the city, it had to be through a jail cell. I dropped my weapon and let them arrest me.

The Review: Is Final Fantasy VIII Really Bad?

Some people might crucify me for saying this, but I believe Final Fantasy VIII is definitely one of the better Final Fantasy games overall. Sure, it isn’t the best one out there, and you might argue it’s the worst one on the PS1, but it’s definitely an extremely good game.

The junction mechanics of Final Fantasy VIII are complex and interesting. The way the various items synergize with the junction system makes the whole thing even deeper and more interesting. The GFs add to it even more, so overall, it’s an amazing package for everyone who loves playing JRPGs for the ability to make overpowered characters if you’re smart and persistent about it.

Final Fantasy VIII - Laguna

There’s a lot of melancholy as the game nears the end, but it lands well.

The story of Final Fantasy VIII is… different. That really is all you can say about it. The story is very different compared to the rest of the series around that time and before it. I’m guessing this is the main reason so many were turned off by it, but if you give the game a chance and keep an open mind, it really is a very enjoyable story. The ending leaves a lot of things open to interpretation, but it does so in a good way, unlike, for instance, the recent Mass Effect 3 ending fiasco.

Final Fantasy VIII - Credits

Emotions are quite well portrayed for the time the game was released in.

The music is memorable and on par with any other in the series. At this point, I’d still say that Final Fantasy IX has the best music overall, while Final Fantasy VII has the most memorable song (One-Winged Angel), but the music of Final Fantasy VIII is definitely very, very good.

The only beef I have with Final Fantasy VIII, really, is the whole idea of monsters leveling as you level. No game should encourage you to run away from fights and avoid leveling at all costs. Sure, the game is beatable even if you don’t take care of not leveling to early, but for anyone who wants to feel powerful later, it just isn’t going to happen on the first play through without some serious grinding in the late game.

The leveling thing is a major flaw, in my opinion, but as I said, it’s still an amazing game overall. It breaks some molds, does a lot of things differently and provides a great experience in spite of its flaws. In addition to this, the technological advancement it brings compared to Final Fantasy VII is alone enough to give it a chance.

Final Fantasy VIII - The End

I didn’t realize the year was 1999. I thought it was earlier.

The Verdict

Any fan of JRPGs should absolutely play this game.

On the way back to the reverend, I decided to take a detour and explore the area on the other side of the river, bellow the city walls.

I soon stumbled into the cave that rich merchant from the inn was talking about. It was immediately obvious why his friend was missing. The cave was infested with carnivorous plants and the friend didn’t manage to get away. I found his body at one of the deeper parts of the cave, after fighting through most of the plants.

I returned to the reverend and told him of my findings. He wasn’t happy about what I said, obviously hoping I would somehow find Abigail to be the culprit, but he accepted it. He decided not to be of any further help, though, so I was stuck.

Odo, Haren and Mikul were obviously the most influential people there, but they would not cooperate without the reverend on my side. Fortune favors the helpful, though. As I was heading back to the inn, I was stopped by a beggar, asking for my help. The old woman was sick and needed White Gull to get better. It just so happens I had a few of those on me, so I gave her one. She was so grateful for what I did, she gave me a ring she stole from the reverend after he refused to help her.

The Witcher, Odo

Odo’s looks match his character.

Haren had slightly bigger issues. The riverbank next to his house was plagued by drowners every night and his merchandise, which was stored outside, was in danger of getting destroyed. I got rid of the drowners easily, but got into trouble afterwards. It turns out; the shipment was meant for a band of Squirrels. With the ring in hand, I managed to convince Haren, Odo and Mikul that the reverend sent me. Odo had a problem with some weeds of the extremely dangerous type in his front yard. I disposed of it, but not after he got me seriously drunk, hoping he would convince me to accept a smaller payment. It worked, to a degree, but I still took a lot of his money. As I was leaving his house, I noticed his dog acting extremely suspiciously, like he was guarding the spot where the carnivorous plant was.

The “Squirrels” or the Scoia’tael is an activist group, mostly consisting of non-human races, which appeared in the north as a consequence of the rampant racism. Apparently, Haren was trading with them. Of course, he wasn’t there to confirm that, so I had to resort to my own judgement. I decided to trust their claims and let them take the shipment. Luckily, I was right. Haren confirmed the shipment was for them when I returned.

Last was Mikul. He needed someone to clear a crypt nearby, so I was the perfect guy for him. He gave me the key, and I immediately went to it. I made a campfire near the entrance to rest and brew a couple of Cat potions, so I could see in the dark better.

The cave was infested with ghouls, but it also had something very valuable. There was a circle of elements inside, teaching me the Igni sign. I can now use magical fire against my enemies. There was something else inside the cave, right at the entrance – a body of a dead woman, with an empty flask in her hand. Whatever it was she drank, was obviously poisoned.

The Witcher, Dead Girl

For a moment, I thought the dead girl was Abigail.

I returned to Mikul and told her about the body. He said it must be “his bellowed Ilsa”, but his grief was not very convincing. In fact, come to think of it, each and every one of them – Odo, Haren, Mikul, even the reverend; they were all hiding something.

It was time to find out what. I returned to the reverend to find out he finally took in Alvin. I spoke to the boy and he seemed fine with it, so I decided not to say anything. I told the reverend what I did and demanded he gave me some information about the salamandra. He told me there was an abandoned home they use as a hideout and sent me to the inn to get the key to it from the innkeeper.

I was finally close to my goal.

I got past the bridge and saved my game. The final boss battle was waiting.

Ultimecia had the same sense of fashion as Edea, it seems, which makes sense since she was the one possessing Edea.  Right at the start of the battle, she did the most evil thing of any boss in any of the Final Fantasy games – she picked the initial party to fight against at random.

Final Fantasy VIII, Ultimecia

The villain needs to have her speech.

That wasn’t the end, though. After I defeated her, she decided to summon her GF as a last resort. Griever had a flying lion style going for it and some truly annoying abilities. The GF could completely destroy an entire stock of magic from any of my characters. Soon after the fight against him started, he decided to do just that and destroy Zell’s whole supply of Life. I took the opportunity to bring in another of my junctioned party members by letting Selphie get killed. A few turns after she died, Squall replaced her spot and I could start doing some serious damage. I used an Aura Stone on Squall and dished out Renzokuken with Lionheart, which pretty much killed Griever in one swoop.Luckily, Zell was one of the first three, and Zell was geared up, so it wasn’t to much of an issue. Additionally, even though Selphie and Rinoa weren’t properly junctioned, thanks to my planned leveling, they still did a decent amount of damage so overall, Ultimecia went down relatively fast.

Final Fantasy VIII, Ultimecia Junctioning Herself

At least she’s thinking outside the box.

Again, it wasn’t over yet. Ultimecia decided to now junction herself to Griever, creating a monster that was a fusion of both of them. This meant the enemy was using Ultimecia’s magic, while still being able to destroy my magic stocks. I took the opportunity to bring in Irvine and continued with Renzokuken on Squall. Eventually, this one fell to and the final form of Ultimecia appeared.

Final Fantasy VIII, Ultimecia New Form

She looked better in her first form.

The final form had a nasty attack called Hell’s Judgement, which would reduce everyone in the group to 1HP. Luckily, I had a supply of about 10 Megaelixirs, so this wasn’t hard to deal with. Again, I continued Renzokuken with Squall, but also brought in Irvine with his Shot. Zell was assigned to Megaelixir usage, so there was never any real danger. Eventually, Ultimecia’s final form was brought down and it was all over.

Everyone tried hard to focus on which moment in time to return to, but Squall had to do something first. He got back to the point where Edea took on Ultimecia’s powers and reassured her it was all going to be OK. Then he tried to return, but it seemed to fail. Luckily, Rinoa upheld her part of the promise to meet each other at the meadow behind Edea’s house and pulled Squall into the right timeline.

Final Fantasy VIII is now completed!
